If you are looking to add more hours to your schedule, you can easily view and claim open shifts directly through the Driver Portal:
Log in to the Driver Portal and select Open Shifts from the menu.
Select your desired week: Under the main header text, locate the week toggle pills. The portal defaults to the current week (e.g., Week of Jun 8). If you want to claim shifts for the following week, click the Week of Jun 15 (or the upcoming week) pill button.
Filter by Day and Depot: Tap the specific day pill buttons (Mon, Tue, Wed, etc.) to browse hours for that day, and ensure you have selected your preferred depot pill button (Hollywood or Bellanca).
Review the "Open Shifts For Selected Day" list, locate the block you want, and click the add icon button under the Action column on the far right to claim it.
Weekly Hour Caps: You can add shifts up to your market's maximum weekly limit. Please note that maximum hours may vary based on operational needs, but standard limits are typically:
- Texas: 40 hours per week max.
- Los Angeles & Miami: 42 hours per week max.
Important Rule on Missed/Passed Shifts: If you miss a scheduled shift entirely (No-Call, No-Show) or end a scheduled shift early, those total scheduled hours will still count towards your maximum hours for the week. The Employee Experience team is unable to remove shifts that have already passed from your schedule. Because passed hours remain locked against your weekly cap, it is critical that you proactively drop any shifts you are unable to work ahead of time if you plan on picking up open hours to make up for them later in the week.
Why can't I pick up a shift?
While the system has several safety and scheduling rules built into it, the Driver Portal will always display the exact reason you are restricted from picking up a specific shift.
If you encounter an error message, it is usually due to one of the following automated guardrails:
1. Driver Status Restrictions
You will temporarily be unable to pick up shifts if your account is currently set to inactive. This includes being on an approved leave of absence or a temporary suspension.
2. Daily Scheduling Limits (Safety is Our Constant)
At Alto, safety is our constant. Because we ground our decisions in safety first and prioritize our people, meeting the bar for safety on the road is built directly into our scheduling platform.
To prevent fatigue and ensure you are always supported to drive your best, the system automatically enforces these daily safety limits. Shifts cannot be manually adjusted or overridden to bypass these rules:
- Maximum of 10 consecutive hours of scheduled shift time.
- Maximum of 12 total scheduled hours overall.
- Maximum of 2 shifts total, regardless of how short they are.
- Maximum of 6 shifts per week total.
3. Required Shift Buffers (Rest Periods)
Depending on how long your first shift is, the system automatically requires a "buffer" (rest break) before you can start a second one:
| If your first shift is... | And your second shift is... | Required buffer before starting: |
| 8 hours | Any length | 2 hours |
| 6 to 7.99 hours | 2 hours or less | 1 hour |
| 6 to 7.99 hours | More than 2 hours | 2 hours |
| Under 6 hours | Any length | No buffer required |
Note: Even when no buffer is required between short shifts, your total combined time still cannot exceed 12 hours in a 24-hour period.
4. System Refresh Delays
- Recently Dropped a Shift: If you just dropped a shift, it can take a few minutes for the portal to refresh your data. Wait a few moments, refresh your page, and your eligibility should update.
- Partial Shifts Worked: If you clock out early or only work part of a shift, the system still logs it as a full shift for safety and scheduling rule calculations.
Important Reminder
Our team is unable to manually add, modify, or override shifts on a driver’s behalf. All scheduling and safety rules are built into the Driver Portal directly and apply consistently to everyone.
